Maggie’s Plant Experiment Maggie read that some plants grow better if the soil is

Maggie’s Plant Experiment Maggie read that some plants grow better if the soil is acidic. She can’t believe that a plant can grow when exposed to acid. Maggie decides to test if the plants she has will grow better when acid is added to the soil. She puts potting soil in two planting containers and transplants two of her geraniums that seem about the same size into the pots. She puts the pots in the same location so that they both get the same sunlight each day, are at the same temperature and she makes sure they get the same amount of water. However, Maggie puts a tablespoon of vinegar in the water she gives to one of the plants. She measures the growth of the plants every week for five weeks.

Al’s Salt Water Experiment Al wonders if adding salt to water will affect how

Al’s Salt Water Experiment Al wonders if adding salt to water will affect how long it takes the water to freeze. Al thinks that salt water will freeze more quickly than fresh water. He decides to check his hypothesis by conducting an experiment. Al takes two ice trays and fills one with distilled water and the other with distilled water that has two tablespoons of salt added. He makes sure he puts exactly the same amount of water in each ice tray. Al takes the trays and puts them side by side in the freezer. Al checks the ice trays every 10 minutes to see if the water in each tray has begun to freeze. Al finds that after 20 minutes the water in the ice tray without the salt has started to form ice, while the ice tray with the salt water is still completely liquid.

Potting Mix Experiment Ten seeds were planted each in 5 pots that contained 500 g of Miracle -Gro Potting Mix. The pots were given the following amounts of water each day for 40 days. Pot 1, 50 m. L; Pot 2, 100 m. L; Pot 3, 150 m. L; Pot 4, 200 m. L; Pot 5, 250 m. L. Because Pot 3 received the recommended amount of water, it was used as a control group. The height of each plant was measured at the end of the experiment.

Keith’s Rocket Science Experiment Keith is an engineer for NASA. He is part of a team that is designing a new type of rocket that will achieve speeds much higher than any previous model. His team has been tasked with finding a material to build the rocket that can withstand such high speeds and extreme temperatures. They are primarily looking at a variety of high-strength metals and will make their decision based on how much damage is sustained during test flights.

Doug’s Pesticide Experiment Doug is a farmer in Richmond. He has had a pest

Doug’s Pesticide Experiment Doug is a farmer in Richmond. He has had a pest problem for the past few growing seasons and has had enough. He has bought the leading five brands of insect killers and plans on testing on his crops. Doug is worried, however, that the pesticides will work better on some types of crops than others. He decides to try an experiment with corn first, so he divides his cornfield into five equal sections and uses one of the pesticides as directed on each section.
