Magazine Journalism By MJ Babington How I came
Magazine Journalism By MJ Babington
How I came up with my idea…. • I first came up with my idea by analysing the magazine I was given. I already had a vague idea of what I wanted my piece to be about and so this gave me a clearer idea. I then read an article in the magazine and set about coming up with a clear plan for what I wanted to achieve. • I then created a reader profile for Grazia Magazine to work out what kind of audience I was targeting.
What did I do next? • I then discussed my idea with my lecturers and they agreed that my idea would suit the magazine. I set about planning an interview with my sister and coming up with some open questions that involved detailed answers so that my piece wasn’t bland empty. • I based my piece on stay at home mums as my sister is a stay at home mum. This meant I had someone to base my piece on. • Once I had interviewed my sister, I put all of the answers into Q and A format, paraphrased and put in my points for each answer. I tried to set the scene as much as possible. • Then I drew out some designs for my page layout.
This was my original design idea but It didn’t fit Grazia because of how uniformed it looked so I decided to change it around a bit by adding in the pictures and moving the text around.
Then I created this but I realised I needed more space for my sidebar so I turned it into 3 pages instead.
I then decided on this as my final layout.
This is my third page but I noticed I had a gap so I decided to add in some pull quotes through out the piece to fill the gaps.
What else did I change in the process? • I added in a border at one point but I didn’t like the way it looked as it pushed all of my writing together so I got rid of it. • I chose some pictures from a photography studio that my sisters partner had then bought so I would’ve had to get permission to do this if I was planning on having them published. Instead, I’ve just mentioned they are Studio 21’s photos.
