Research Question Does the environment that the dust devil tracks cross have an effect

Research Question Does the environment that the dust devil tracks cross have an effect on its tracks? • Why is your science question important? - We can learn about wind patterns on Mars. - By further expanding our knowledge about Martian dust devils, we can learn about the path of dust devils. • Why is your science question interesting? - We get to see if the environment affects dust devil tracks. Background information slides • Dust devils on mars form the same way they do in deserts on Earth. “You need strong surface heating so the ground can get hotter than the air around it, ” explains Lemmon, an associate research scientist in the Department of Atmospheric Science at Texas A & M University. Heated less – dense air closed to the ground rises, punching through the layer of colder dense air above; rising flumes of hot air and falling plumes of cool air begin circulating vertically in convection cells. Now, if a horizontal gust of wind blows thorough, “it turns the convection cells under sides, so they begin spinning horizontally, forming vertical columns – and starting a dust devil. http: //science. nasa. gov/science/news/science-at-nasa/2005/14 jul_dustdevils/

Background information slides Hot air rising through the center of the column powers the whirling air even faster – fast enough to begin up sand. Sand scouring the ground then dislodges flour – find dust, and the central column of hot rising air buoys that dust high aloft. http: //science. nasa. gov/science/news/science-at-nasa/2005/14 jul_dustdevils/

Hypothesis • Who’s? Hypothesis (you may, or may not need more than one of these statements) – If there are many samples of dust devil tracks in preserved craters, then by looking at pictures of dust devil tracks, there will be dust devil tracks inside the preserved crater – Because the wind will keep guiding it forward regardless if there is a hole in the ground or not. (Maela, Wesley, Aaron & Michael) • Who’s? Hypothesis (you may, or may not need more than one of these statements) – If there are many samples of dust devil tracks in preserved craters, then by looking at pictures of dust devil tracks, there will be dust devil tracks going around the preserved crater – Because the wind inside will either push the dust devil to one side or the other. Our group said that this graph says that these points are where Dust Devils cross craters on Mars. The trends and patterns that we observed in the graph were that most of the places were the Dust Devils crossed, were on the lower half of Mars. This is what our group observed about the graph.
