Because of the thistle seeds it eats, in Christian symbolism the Goldfinch is associated

Because of the thistle seeds it eats, in Christian symbolism the Goldfinch is associated with the Passion and Christ's Crown of Thorns. The Goldfinch, appearing in pictures of the Madonna and the Christ Child, represents the foreknowledge Jesus and Mary had of the Crucifixion. It is also an emblem of endurance, fruitfulness, and persistence. Because it symbolizes the Passion, the goldfinch is considered a "saviour" bird and may be pictured with the common fly (which represents sin and disease, see Carlo Crivelli’s “Madonna and child” from the Metropolitan Museum ). During medieval times, this bird was used by some as a charm to ward off the plague. The Taddei Tondo (or The Virgin and Child with the Infant St John) is a circular relief sculpture by the Italian Renaissance artist Michelangelo Buonarroti. It is located in the Royal Academy of Arts in Piccadilly, central London, England. It is the only marble sculpture by Michelangelo in the United Kingdom. The sculpture was carved by Michelangelo in Florence, Italy, in 1504– 06 and represents a seated Virgin Mary with the baby Jesus who is sprawled across her lap and looking back over his right shoulder towards the infant St John the Baptist who is standing over him and offering him a bird. Taddei Tondo is the greatest treasure in the Royal Academy’s collection. It was bought by Sir George Beaumont during a visit to Italy in 1821 and it was left to the Academy in 1830.
