Types of Translation TRANSLATION HUMAN MECHANICAL COMPUTER-AIDED
MECHANICAL / MACHINE TRANSLATION (MT) Always non-literary ◦ computer - programmed to decode (SL) & encode (TL). ◦ equivalence between SL and TL (one-to-one correspondence). Success in the 1980 s as a business with the development of technology. Human translation is more efficient
Machine Translation a procedure whereby a computer program analyses a source text and produces a target text without further human intervention. (Wikipedia) Involves human interaction in pre-editing and postediting In translation of technical texts like reports and manuals, not much human interference is required. Does not take into consideration that human language is based on context. Has to be proof read by humans. It is a sub-field of computational linguistics that uses computer software to translate. Based on substitution of words. Can be customised based on category and field. Also called Human Aided Machine Translation (HAMT)
Problems of Machine Translation Human language is not based on algorithms or formulae. It has polysemy – different meanings. Connotations based on context and idioms and puns that cannot be translated. Machine Translation does not apply to literary texts.
Audiovisual Translation (AVT) an exciting new field in translation - a growing professional demand dubbing and voice-over surtitling and subtitling http: //ics. leeds. ac. uk/papers/llp/exhibits/16/Intro. AVTranslation_Adriana_Serban. ppt#2 57, 2, Talk map

The machine supports a human translator. translation an interactive process between human and computer.
