Macbeth hears of his future from the Witches and receives lands from King Duncan 1. What is the point of the first scene literally and figuratively as part of the whole play? The witches set out the future course of events. We just do not know, nor does Macbeth how those events will come about. They establish an air of mystery and supernatural powers at work. Initially Macbeth finds those powers, he supposes working to his advantage. But his tragic flaws will undo him, lead him to become a tyrant and ultimately kill him. In a way the witches predict all of this. 2. What does Duncan call Macbeth when he hears Macbeth has defeated Macdonwald? Duncan, king of Scotland, is pleased that Macbeth has helped defeat the rebel Thane (Earl) of Cawdor, Macdonwald. Macbeth also helped Duncan defeat Norwegian invaders allied to that Thane. So Duncan gives Macbeth Macdonwald’s old lands, making Macbeth the new Thane (Earl) Cawdor. This the witches predicted
The Death of Macdonwald and the predictions of the witches Who is sentenced to death by King Duncan? For his treachery Macdonald, the old Thane of Cawdor, is sentence to death. Nothing becomes him so well as the way he dies, observes one of Duncan’s loyal lords. What do the witches predict in Act I for Macbeth? For Banquo? First, before he has even heard from Duncan about his becoming Thane of Cawdor in Macdonald’s place, Macbeth is told he will receive that new position and all the lands attached for his military services to the Scottish king, Duncan. Second, Macbeth is told he shall be the next Scottish king. How this is to happen is not explained by the witches. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, like Macdonald before them, begin to plot against Duncan, aiming to take his life, so Macbeth can become king Finally, Banquo is told while Macbeth is to be king, there will be no little Macbeth’s on the throne. It will be Banquo’s children who follow Macbeth as kings of Scotland

Ross, one of Duncan’s lords, rides up and announces, seemingly to Macbeth’s surprise, that he, Macbeth, has been made the Thane of Cawdor – just as the witches had earlier predicted. Banquo, like Macbeth, is surprised that the witches have predicted Macbeth’s new title. He is leery. What does Banquo say about the motives of the “instruments of darkness” Banquo, whom Macbeth will kill to stop his children succeeding him when he has replaced Duncan – clearly Macbeth takes the witches predictions seriously – thinks that the predictions might bring tragedy. His own, of course. Both are surprise, but while Banquo’s response is great caution to what he has heard, the witches prediction fire Macbeth’s ambitions.
