ABOUT THE ARTIST Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898 -1972) is one of the world's most famous graphic artists. His art is enjoyed by millions of people all over the world, as can be seen on the many web sites on the internet. Like some of his famous predecessors, - Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Dürer and Holbein-, M. C. Escher was lefthanded. His art continues to amaze and wonder millions of people all over the world. In his work we recognize his keen observation of the world around us and the expressions of his own fantasies. M. C. Escher shows us that reality is wondrous, comprehensible and fascinating.

EARLY LIFE Maurits Cornelis was born in Leeuwarden, Friesland, in a house that forms part of the Princesshof Ceramics Museum today. He was a sickly child, and was placed in a special school at the age of seven and failed the second grade. Although he excelled at drawing, his grades were generally poor. In 1919, Escher attended the Haarlem School of Architecture and Decorative Arts in Haarlem. In 1922, Escher left the school after having gained experience in drawing and making woodcuts.

LATER LIFE In 1922, an important year of his life, Escher traveled through Italy

LATER LIFE In 1922, an important year of his life, Escher traveled through Italy and Spain. He was impressed by the Italian countryside and by the Alhambra, a fourteenth-century Moorish castle in Granada. The intricate decorative designs at Alhambra, which were based on geometrical symmetries featuring interlocking repetitive patterns sculpted into the stone walls and ceilings. He returned to Italy regularly in the following years. In 1935, the political climate in Italy became unacceptable to Escher. He had no interest in politics, finding it impossible to involve himself with any ideals other than the expressions of his own concepts through his own particular medium, but he was averse to fanaticism and hypocrisy.

LEGACY The special way of thinking and the rich graphic work of M. C.

LEGACY The special way of thinking and the rich graphic work of M. C. Escher has had a continuous influence in science and art. Ownership of the Escher intellectual property and of his unique art works have been separated from each other. Upon Escher's death, his three sons dissolved the M. C. Escher Foundation, and they became partners in the ownership of the art works. The copyrights remained the possession of the three sons – who later sold them to Cordon Art, a Dutch company. The primary institutional collections of original works by M. C. Escher are in the Escher Museum, the National Gallery of Art (Washington, DC); and the Boston Public Library.

REFLECTION M. C. Escher is one of the world’s best artists, and has made

REFLECTION M. C. Escher is one of the world’s best artists, and has made a impression on art that will last forever. If I could ever go to his museum, I would not hesitate to. I would also recommend his arts to anyone else that wants to see art that bends reality and makes you think about what is real. Using symmetry and other tools like lithographs and woodcuts he was able to make the art that he thought of purely in his mind. Although he didn’t have the greatest knowledge in mathematics, or other academics, he was able to make intellectual arts that have the smartest scholars in awe.
