Lyon, capital of both the Rhône department and the Auvergne-Rhône- Alpes region, east-central France, set on a hilly site at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers. It is the third largest city in France, after Paris and Marseille.
HISTORY A Roman military colony was founded there in 43 BC, and it subsequently became the capital of the Gauls.
The Renaissance was a period of economic prosperity. By the 17 th century it was the silk-manufacturing capital of Europe. Printing was introduced and Lyon soon became one of the most active printing centers in Europe. On the right bank of the Saône, Vieux Lyon (Old Lyon)is one of the most important architectural complexes of the Renaissance era.
The French Revolution brought uneasy times. Urban development began only in the 1950 s, after the periods of stagnation and depression between 1920 and the end of World War II.

MONUMENTSS Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourvière This 19 th-century church is one of Lyon's most distinctive landmarks. Its architecture is a rather strange mix of architectural styles. Place Bellecour This square is truly vast. Laid out in the 17 th century, it is distinctive for its surface- covering of bright red sand. Pride of place in the square is a statue of the French king, Louis XIV. The Place Bellecour has become a popular meeting place. Bartholdi Fountain The centerpiece of Lyon's Place des Terreaux is its eye-catching 19 th-century fountain, designed and built by Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi is famous for having created New York's Statue of Liberty.
GASTRONOMY Rosette : dry pork sausage usually cut very thin . It is usually a delicious appetizer or makes a great sandwich in a fresh baguette. Andouillette : Sausage made with pork’s intestines, pepper, wine and onions. It has a very strong smell as it is sometimes made with the pork’s colon ! Baguette: is a long thin loaf of “French bread” that is commonly made from basic lean dough. It is distinguished by its length and crisp crust.

Coussin de Lyon : Made with chocolate, marzipan (almond) and curacao liqueur, this sweet specialty has the shape of a pillow which is why it is called coussin (pillow in French).

PERFUME The fragrance, elegant and refined, was created in 1999 by Calice Becker and François Demachy with a floral bouquet. Chanel n 5, made in 1921 by Ernest Beaux, is the first combination of the story that mix more than 80 different ingredients between natural and synthetic essences. Hermès’s ‘fragrant adventure’ began in 1951, when was composed Eau d’Hermès. Many great names have worked on creations. Jean-Claude Ellena , became its exclusive perfumer.
FRENCH FASHION The founder of Dior fashion house, Christian Dior, is known for his revolution in women’s dress with ‘the New Look, ’ which brought Paris back its status as a fashion capital. Le Smoking! There is no way one can remember Yves Saint Laurent without a reference to the legendary Le Smoking suit. The designer entered the fashion world very early, and at the age of 21 he became the head designer at Dior.
Coco Chanel is known as one of the most influential fashion designers of the 20 th century. Her designs liberated women from corsets and brought them the freedom they needed; some consider her to be one of the first well-known feminist designers Paco Rabanne is another French designer who started his career in costume design. After some collaborations with Dior, Givenchy and Balenciaga, Rabanne became known by the public for designing the costumes for the science-fiction film Barbarella. He remains one of the lead innovators of the ‘bohemian chic’ look in France.
