Lymphatic System 16. 4
Functions of the Lymphatic System Is part of the immune system and helps destroy microorganisms that enter the body. 4 main functions: 1. Absorbs some of the tissue fluid that collects around cells. 2. absorbs fat from the digestive system & transports it to the circulatory system. 3. Filters dead cells, viruses, bacteria, and other unneeded materials and returns the tissue fluid to the circulatory system. 4. Helps fight off illness and infections & includes white blood cell development structures.
Lymphatic System Parts Lymph – tissue fluid that has been absorbed by the lymph vessels. Lymph Vessels- absorb and transport lymph. Lymph Nodes – clusters of small, spongy structures that filter particles from lymph. Bone Marrow – spongy center of bone where RBCs and WBCs form. (B cells mature in bone marrow) Thymus – where T cells complete their development. Spleen – organ that recycles worn-out RBCs and produces and stores lymphocytes. Tonsils – clusters of lymph tissue on the sides of your mouth. Lymphocytes – WBCs that destroy pathogens. 2 cells and T cells. types: B
Lymph Diseases & Disorders Tonsillitis- an inflammation of the tonsils due to infection. Lymphoma- uncontrolled production of WBCs that lead to cancer. Hodgkin’s Lymphoma- cancer of the lymph nodes Damage to the lymphatic system can prevent tissue fluid from draining into the lymph vessels.
Lymphatic System & Homeostasis Lymphatic system helps maintain homeostasis by regulating fluid buildup around cells. Supports circulatory system by cleaning fluids and replacing them in the bloodstream. Helps to fight infection throughout the body.
