LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE OF LOWER LIMB
Superficial inguinal lymph nodes ü Horizontal group ü Vertical group Deep inguinal lymph nodes
Introduction • The superficial lymph vessels ascend in the limb in the superficial fascia with superficial veins • The deep lymph vessels lie deep to the deep fascia and follow deep arteries and veins • All lymph vessels ultimately drain into the deep inguinal group of nodes situated in groin
SUPERFICIAL INGUINAL LYMPH NODES HORIZONTAL GROUP Below the inguinal ligament Medial members: These receive the lymph from: ü Anterior abdominal wall below the umbilicus ü Perineum ü Urethra, external genitalia(scrotum excluded) ü Lower half of anal canal
Lateral members: Receive the lymph from the back below the iliac crests VERTICAL GROUP: Along the terminal part of great saphenous vein, receive lymph from: ü Lower limb ü Skin ü Fascia ü (except from back and lateral side of the calf and lateral side of foot, which drains into popliteal nodes)
DEEP INGUINAL LYMPH NODES Lie beneath the deep fascia along the medial side of femoral vein in femoral canal(usually three in no; ), receive the lymph from: ü Superficial inguinal lymph nodes ü Popliteal nodes ü The efferent lymph vessels pass upward through the femoral canal into the abdominal cavity and they drain into the ext iliac nodes
Popliteal lymph nodes • situated in popliteal fossa(almost 6) • receive superficial lymph vessels that accompany small saphenous vein from lateral side of foot and from back and lateral side of calf • receive lymph from deeper structures of the leg below the knee • efferents from these nodes drain upward to deep inguinal nodes
