Flag of Luxembourg • Almost identical to that of the Netherlands, except that it is longer and its blue stripe is a lighter shade • The red, white, and blue coloring was derived from the Grand Duke's coat of arms, which dates from the 13 th century

History • Luxembourg was founded in 963, • In 1437, the House of Luxembourg suffered a succession crisis, precipitated by the lack of a male heir to assume throne, that led to the territory being sold to Philip the Good of Burgundy • In 1815 became a Grand Duchy and an independent state as part of the Netherlands. • Lost over 50% its territory to Belgium in 1839. • Independence from the Netherlands came in 1867
