LUMBER VERTEBRAE DR. ARUN AWASTHI TUTOR CIMS&H LUCKNOW
Peculiarites Massive body Triangular vertebral foramen Spine is quadrangular Superior articular facet is concave Inferior articular facet is convex Posteroinferior part of root of transverse process has rough elevation called elevation.
classification 5 lumber vertebrae Typical- first to fourth Atypical-fifth
Typical lumber vertebrae (a) body Large Transverse diameter is more than the anterior posterior diameter Upper and lower surface is covered hyaline cartilage which in turn are related to inter vertebral disc. Anterior surface in the midline provides attachment to the anterior longitudinal ligament Crura of the diaphragm is attached to the anterior surface on either side of anterior longitudinal ligament. Right crus is attached to upper three while left crus to upper lumber vertebrae Psoas major and its tendinous arches are attached to upper and lower margin of side of the body Posterior longitudinal ligament is attached to the margin.
Vertebral foramen Triangular in cross section Outer two meninges- Dura mater arachnoid mater are found all the lumber vertebrae Conusmedullaris with pia mater occupies the vertebral foramen of 1 st lumber vertebrae Caudaequina is contained in the foramina of lumber vertebrae
Vertebral arch 1. Pedicle Ø Short and strong Inferior vertebral notch are deeper then superior. 2. Lamina these are short and thick Directed posteromedially Ligamentum flavum is attached to the upper and lower half of its anterior surface Posterior surface of lamina gives attachments to deep muscle of back 3. Spine Ø Quadrangular in shape Ø Posterior border provide is attachment to superiospinus ligament in middle and posterior lamella of thoracolumbar facia on each side.
4. Transverse process Tapering and thin Homologous with the ribs and thoracic region Medial and lateral articular ligaments are attached to the tip of transverse process of 1 st lumber vertebrae Iliolumber ligaments attached to the tip of 5 th lumber vertebrae Anterior surface is marked by a faint ridge to which is attached to the anterior lamellae of thoracolumbar facia. 5. Articular process Ø Superior articular facet is concave and faces mainly medially while inferior articular facet is convex and faces mainly laterally
Atypical vertebrae 5 th lumber vertebrae Thick and short transverse processes are connected to whole of the pedicle and part of the body The distance between inferior articular process is more then between superior articular process is more then that between superior articular process The body much deeper anteriorly then posteriorly.
