Luke 10: 25 -37
Luke 10: 25 -37
Luke 10: 25 And behold a certain lawyer stood up and put Him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? ”
Luke 10: 26 And He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How does it read to you? ”
Luke 10: 27 And he answered and said, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your
Luke 10: 27 mind, and your neighbor as yourself. ”
Luke 10: 28 And He said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this and you will live. ”
Luke 10: 29 But wishing to justify himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor? ”
Luke 10: 30 Jesus replied and said, “A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho; and he fell among robbers, and they stripped him and beat him, and
Luke 10: 30 went off leaving him half dead.
Luke 10: 31 And by chance a certain priest was going down on that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.
Luke 10: 32 And likewise a Levite also, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.
Luke 10: 33 But a certain Samaritan, who was on a journey, came upon him; and when he saw him, he felt compassion,
Luke 10: 34 and came to him, and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them; and he put him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took
Luke 10: 34 care of him.
Luke 10: 35 And on the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper and said, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I return, I will
Luke 10: 35 repay you. ’
Luke 10: 36 Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the robbers hands? ”
Luke 10: 37 And he said, “The one who showed mercy toward him. ” And Jesus said to him, “Go and do the same. ”
What comes to your mind when you think about the story of the Good Samaritan?
For a lot of people the story has to do with caring for the poor and needy.
Others like to beat the drum for social justice issues or even for socialism.
But really it’s a story about salvation!
Much like the story of Nicodemus or the Rich Young Ruler, a Lawyer asks a question.
“Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? ”
But Jesus sees past the question right into the heart of the person asking it.
The man was filled with religious pride and arrogance.
He wanted to trick or trap Jesus into saying or doing the wrong thing.
His heart was sick and desperately wicked.
Jeremiah 17: 9 The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick; who can understand it?
Jeremiah 17: 10 “I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the mind, even to give to each man according to his ways, according to the results of his deeds. ”
Knowing better than to fall into a trap, Jesus answers his question with a question.
“What is written in the Law? How does it read to you? ”
I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty impressed that He didn’t throw a jab in their.
The expert in the Law quoted straight from Deuteronomy 6 and Leviticus 19.
Luke 10: 27 And he answered and said, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your
Luke 10: 27 mind, and your neighbor as yourself. ”
After the Lawyer answered the question for Jesus, He simply agreed.
Luke 10: 28 And He said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this and you will live. ”
Though we probably would have turned to sarcasm by now, Jesus never did.
So you really are an expert in the letter of the Law!
You know your Torah / Bible pretty good.
But don’t just quote it, go and do it.
James 1: 22 But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.
But instead of agreeing with Jesus, the Lawyer tried to modify his responsibility.
Luke 10: 29 But wishing to justify himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor? ”
So Jesus was compelled to tell a story.
Luke 10: 30 a Jesus replied and said, “A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho; and he fell among robbers,
Luke 10: 30 b and they stripped him and beat him, and went off leaving him half dead.
What a horrible story!
If only somebody were there to help.
Luke 10: 31 And by chance a certain priest was going down on that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.
Instead of helping this man, he had absolutely nothing to do with him.
Though people may speculate as to why he didn’t help, the story doesn’t elaborate.
Was he on his way to serve at the Temple and couldn’t risk defiling himself?
Maybe he thought the robbers were still in the area and he needed to move quickly.
Did he quickly judge the man and discern this was his punishment for a sinful life?
Or did he recognize the guy and say, “Well it’s about time!”
We simply don’t know!
But what do we know?
G 492 α ντιπαρε ρχομαι an-tee-par-er'-khom-ahee From G 473 and G 3928; to go along opposite: - pass by on the other side.
This is a very strong statement in the Greek.
G 473 α ντι / an-tee' A primary particle; opposite, that is, instead or because of. Often used in composition to denote contrast, requital, substitution, correspondence, etc.
Even words like neglect and ignore are connected with it.
I sure hope this story gets better soon!
Luke 10: 32 And likewise a Levite also, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.
Well, if the Priest and the Levite didn’t stop to help him, maybe they know something we don’t.
Maybe we should do the same?
This seemed to be a common practice, but why?
Psalm 139: 19 O that You would slay the wicked, O God; depart from me, therefore, men of bloodshed.
Psalm 139: 20 For they speak against You wickedly, and Your enemies take Your name in vain.
Psalm 139: 21 Do I not hate those who hate You, O Lord? And do I not loathe those who rise up against You?
Psalm 139: 22 I hate them with the utmost hatred; they have become my enemies.
Psalm 139: 23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me and know my anxious thoughts;
Psalm 139: 24 and see if there be any hurtful way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way.
While David meant these words with great sincerity, many of the religious leaders had given them a new meaning.
Many began only to fellowship with their own like minded group of people.
But Jesus reminded them to love!
Matthew 5: 43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy. ’
Matthew 5: 44 But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you…”
Later, the disciples of Jesus would share the same message of love.
Romans 12: 17 Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Respect what is right in the sight of all men.
Romans 12: 18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men.
Romans 12: 19 Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay, ” says the Lord.
Romans 12: 20 “But if your enemy is hungry, feed him, and if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap burning coals on his head. ”
Romans 12: 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
Now, back to the story!
Luke 10: 33 But a certain Samaritan, who was on a journey, came upon him; and when he saw him, he felt compassion,
G 4697 σπλαγχνι ζομαι splangkh-nid'-zom-ahee To have the bowels yearn, (figuratively) feel sympathy, to pity: have (be moved with) compassion.
For that amount of money, he could have stayed about a month.
Wow!
He was moved with compassion!
He came to him!
He disinfected and began the healing process.
He bandaged his wounds.
He picked him up and put him on his animal.
He brought him to the inn.
He stayed up and cared for him throughout the night.
He made provision for him.
Do you see the abundance of love?
Do you see how lavishly it’s poured out and shared?
The love of God goes above and beyond.
It’s completely off the chain and over the top.
So, did the Lawyer bite off a little more than he could chew?
What could Jesus possibly say next?
Wait for it!
Here comes the big question.
Luke 10: 36 Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the robbers hands? ”
Luke 10: 37 And he said, “The one who showed mercy toward him. ” And Jesus said to him, “Go and do the same. ”
G 1656 ε λεος / el'-eh-os Of uncertain affinity; compassion (human or divine, especially active): (+ tender) mercy.
The story of the Good Samaritan absolutely crushed the Lawyers mindset and way of life.
Have you heard the old statement, “You have to get somebody lost before you can get them saved. ”?
Well that’s exactly what Jesus did with the Lawyer.
The main point of the story isn’t be kind to those in need, it’s if you really love God, then you’ll love and care for people.
Jesus, was showing us how to properly evangelize.
I John 2: 9 The one who says he is in the Light and yet hates his brother is in the darkness until now.
I John 2: 10 The one who loves his brother abides in the Light and there is no cause for stumbling in him.
I John 2: 11 But the one who hates his brother is in the darkness, and does not know where he is going because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
The Priest didn’t love God and love his neighbor!
The Levite didn’t love God and love his neighbor!
The Lawyer didn’t love God and love his neighbor!
Now that he’s good and lost, so to speak…
He can be found!
