TOTEM/CT-PSS • I proposed in internal discussion to set up a group with different experts to evaluate the impact of continuous Roman Operation at standard optics and to review different components essential for the operation after LS 2 – Mechanics: • compression/decompression of bellows • precision screws and motors to move RPs – Thermal heating: • temperature cycles of ferrites (special geometry) already discussed with Benoit on possibility to setup a test stand to simulate this • exposure of thin window to beam (thermal and radiation – Cooling: • impact of long term operation on evaporative cooling components in RP detectors (capillaries) - pressure / leak test of pipeline system – Vacuum: • NEG pump status and vacuum situation in RP areas – Optical fibres: • performance after radiation – RP movement hardware/software: • integration of new movement system architecture Joachim Baechler

TOTEM • At this stage we are not clear if we need to open the LHC beam line during LS 2. • In view of the work in the LHC tunnel related to HL-LHC, we have to adopt the schedule of general service work for TOTEM/CT-PPS such as the exchange of electronic components and detector packages etc. . • In this sense we should dismount all detector packages as early as possible (respecting ALARA) from the tunnel and bring them for service work to the surface. • In particular we have to foresee an extremely good protection of all Roman Pot components against dust. • It could make sense if the working group would include the colleagues from AFP for that issues which are common to both projects. TOTEM: Run 3 • The operation of the present TOTEM Roman Pots at high beta optics/special runs is officially foreseen until the max. possible energy of LHC has been reached, allowing to complete the approved scientific mission of TOTEM. • Any future operation of the Roman Pots within the CTPPS project at standard LHC optics will depend on the insertion limitations we find during the intensity ramps. • The performance of the detector inserts in the Roman Pots under the specific radiation conditions (tracking and timing) will then determine the physics reach. ALFA – LS 2 The long term plan for ALFA is to finish the physics program, total cross section and luminosity measurement, in Run 2. No plans for LS 2 • Still have the 14 Te. V total cross section on our list. • If ALFA continues in Run 3 there are ideas about replacing the fiber detectors by Silicon pixel - this still at the speculative level Note possible refurbishment of ALFA RPs by AFP…
