LS 2 BASELINE in EDMS • BE-CO LS 2 Plans (EDMS 1997812): version 1 approved with comments. • Technical note, with presentation of SW and HW choices and work plan for LS 2, has been released as version 2. • Our partner groups are invited to read and provide comments. • This note will be kept up to date with the latest technical decisions. LS 2 PLANNING: Deployment slot for new Timing Generation • Complete dismantling + new installation of GMT racks in Building 874. • Work duration: 2 weeks • Impact on timing distribution to equipment group labs & running machines in LS 2 (except CLEAR and LN 4 which run a dedicated GMT). • Planning options to minimize the impact: Plan A: January 2020, extending BE-CO Maintenance days. ÞOne-week perturbations expected for EQ GP labs. ÞNo perturbation on operation as no running machines during this period. Plan B: January 2019, extending BE-CO days (4 days). Deployment Strategy of post-LS 2 infrastructure in LS 2 BE-CO Proposal • Libraries and dev tools are released at the coordinated release date. • When do we switch (deploy) from the pre-LS 2 to the post-LS 2 infrastructure? • BE-CO proposal: deploy post-LS 2 CO infrastructure for LN 4 Beam tests (July -Sept 2019) • Aim: validate as much as possible the new post-LS 2 releases • Except for the JDK. Version (8 or 11) to be later decided. • => Constraint on partner groups: by June 2019: • Move OS to CENTOS 7 for all LN 4 FECs • Move all classes to FESA 3 • Release Java applications with post-LS 2 libraries • Is this proposal realistic? JDK (Java Development Kit) Problematic • Technical study ongoing in BE-CO for the JDK transition from (current) version 8 to 11. • Testing of JDK 11 components, evaluation of impact. • JDK 11 impact on developers expected high (many changes with respect to JDK 8) • Constraints from Oracle support: • Not possible to migrate to intermediate versions 9 or 10, to minimize the impact on our clients, as those have NO long term support. • JDK 8 Oracle support stops in 2021 => not possible to keep JDK 8 for the whole Run 3. • BE-CO strategy will be proposed at CO 3 by Nov-Dec 2018. • Preliminary idea: • Use of JDK 8 with post-LS 2 releases until end 2019. • Deploy JDK 11 for the latest LS 2 coordinated release before Injectors startup (Jan 2020).
