WHAT CAN CAUSE LOW VISON OR BLINDNESS • Macular Degeneration affects the retina and the light sensitive lining at the back of the eye • Diabetic retinopathy is found in people with diabetes and they can experience day-to-day changes in their vison and/or visual functioning as a result of the disease • Retinitis retinopathy gradually destroys night vison • Amblyopia causes the visual system to fail and develop abnormally during childhood • Cataracts are the clouding of the lens inside the eye • Glaucoma causes damage to the optic nerve
THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF BLINDNESS • Color blindness is the inability to perceive differences in various shades of color. • Night blindness is a difficulty seeing under situations of decreased illumination. • Snow blindness is loss of vison after exposure of the eye to large amounts of ultraviolet light. • 80 -90% of legally blind people have some perception of vison.
WARNING SIGNS • Flashing lights • Gray shadow in your vison • Sudden loos of vision in one eye • Eye pain • Red eye • Eye injury
HOW TO TEACH THE BLIND • Use direct instruction with the student to teach braille reading, writing, and formats • Produce all materials in braille • Read materials which has been written on a chalkboard or verbalize as you teach
TREATMENT • Antibiotics or antiviral drugs to help eye infections • Corrective lenses • Patch therapy • Surgery to remove cataracts • Laser surgery • Cryotherapy
