Motives n n A lot we do is motivated by selfishness, pride, rebellion or stubbornness. These verses aren’t marriage verses, family verses – they’re “church” verses. God’s people have always been, first, human. Many lessons here and elsewhere
Heavenly vs. Earthly Wisdom n n n James 3: 13 -18 2 Timothy 3: 3 – “implacable”. I Peter 1: 22 John 13: 34 Heb. 13: 1 Rom. 12: 10 I Pet. 2: 17; 3: 8 I John 4: 7 I Thess. 4: 9 I Cor. 14: 1 “Pursue” - a hunter tracking game. I Cor. 16: 14 – “Let all your matters, about which I have given you directions in this letter, be transacted with love. ”
Chapter 6 n n n Your differences about worldly matters. Worldly matters “matter”. No they don’t! Eternity matters! How do you “take joyfully” the spoiling of your possessions? Heb. 10: 34 “love” doesn’t make the other person honorable. Sometimes we do things that are shameful and we later regret.
Chapter 7 n n Disputes about married and single states. One of the “hot” items today, and it’s a difficult one. It involves people – real ones – with feelings Love involves eternal considerations, it involves the decisions of others. We can destroy a church or a soul by being harsh.
Chapter 8 n n n Things sacrificed to idols. This doesn’t matter either. It does to some. We are kind to weaknesses while striving to teach the truth. V. 11
Chapter 11 n n The Lord’s Supper A “Communion” in remembrance of the One who died for us. But how can we share with those folks who dress “funny”, talk “funny”, Can you imagine of us, dressed as we are, walking into an assembly of 1 st century Christians. How they would stare!
Chapter 12 -14 n n n Exercising spiritual gifts. The church with the most gifts had the most trouble with them. A true test of “loving one another”, when someone is outdoing me.
n n Consider your brother – do not give occasion to sin nor violate God’s law. Allowing someone to continue in wrong doing will cause his soul to be lost. That isn’t love either.
