He’s eating with sinners! Luke 15: 1 -2 - What they accuse Him of? He starts with simple illustrations… 4 -7 “What man of you…if he loses one sheep? 8 -10 “Or what woman… if loses one coin? Jesus then gets to the heart of the matter – Luke 15: 11 -32 The younger son The older brother The Father (of both)
The younger son The prodigal son – Luke 15: 11 -15 Rejected the Fathers house, left his father, wasting his life Had his “light bulb” moment – Luke 15: 16 -19 The moment people realize where they are, what they have left Sometimes people need to “hit rock bottom” to come to their senses We were all once the prodigal – every one of us! Being in want, far from our Father, dead and lost! We should be compassionate on those lost in sin – Jam 5: 19 -20
The older brother His response to the prodigals return Luke 15: 25 -30 Your brother has returned! Vs. 27 He was angry and would not celebrate with his father Actually accuses brother of greater evil – vs. 30 Assumed We the worst – how would he know brothers actions? must be careful not to be like older brother Thinking too highly of ourselves – “Well, I never…” – Luke 18: 11 -12 Pharisees and Scribes issue? Luke 15: 2 and 18: 9 Who do we compare ourselves to?
The Father - Luke 15: 20 -24 and 15: 31 -32 He let the son depart He never stopped hoping for his sons return (2 Pet. 3: 9) When What he saw his son in the distance? is our desire, for the lost? Never stop praying for, hoping for, working for the lost son to return! Embrace them, restore them (as a brother – not a servant) – 2 Cor. 2: 5 -8
How hard we would look for a lost $100, our lost keys, or missing phone? When misplace or lose physical things of value? Turn over the room looking for them Retrace our steps, “where is it? ” Celebrate finding that which was lost! How can we have that attitude towards a lost brother? Help them “come to their senses” – return to the Father Pray for them, never stop looking for their return Remember who we were 1 Cor. 6: 11 – humbly helping restore them as sons Running to them, embracing them, and REJOICING!
