William Golding §Born September 19, 1911 in Cornwall, England §Entered the Royal navy at the start of WWII. §He based some of Lord of the Flies on some of the experiences he had in WWII.

Themes are the fundamental and often universal ideas explored in a literary work. Loss of Innocence Good vs. Evil Explain why Good vs. Evil and Loss of Innocence are examples of themes.

Motifs are recurring structures, contrasts, and literary devices that can help to develop and inform the text’s major themes. Biblical Parallels Lord of the Flies has Christian relations in the story. Simon can be related to Jesus because the other boys sacrifice him because he reached the moral truth.

Symbols are objects, characters, figures, and colors used to represent abstract ideas or concepts. Piggy’s Glasses symbolize intelligence, rationality, and common sense. Conch Shell symbolizes democracy, order, respect and authority. The Knife is a symbol of evil, intimidation, violence, and power.
