Journal 4: Denial and Guilt �At the beginning of chapter 10, Ralph mentions the name Simon – Piggy nods solemnly, but does not speak �“Memory of the dance that none of them had attended shook all four boys convulsively. ‘We left early’” (158). �We know that the boys didn’t leave early. �Would it help the boys if they talked about what happened? �Piggy says it was an accident. Was it?

The Death of Piggy �Roger threw a rock at Sam and Eric as they approached and later is the one that leaned on the lever releasing the boulder �Roger has always thrown to miss �Was Piggy’s death an accident? �Do you think Jack would have preferred to have killed Piggy himself? �Conch is destroyed (loss of hope) �Piggy’s brains are spilled onto the rocks (loss of intelligence and rational thought)

The Lord of the Flies �Ralph comes upon the LOTF before he meets with Sam and Eric while they ‘kept watch’ �Ralph punches and breaks the gleaming white skull �He takes the spear of the hunters to protect himself when they come for him �The LOTF laughs at Ralph – reason and order have been lost and replaced by irresponsible evil

The End “Ralph wept for the end of innocence, the darkness of man’s heart, and the fall through the air of the true, wise friend called Piggy” (202). �Why do you think Golding made the final tribute on the island to rational thought and intelligence? �Is this a more fitting end than if he were to have spoken on the evils of men? �Would Ralph have been better off not having to live with the memories of the island?
