Research and Theory Cooperative Learning l Five Defining Elements l Positive Interdependence (sense of ownership) l Face-to-face interaction (helping each other learn) l Individual and group accountability (everyone contributes) l Interpersonal and small group skills (communication, trust, leadership, decision making skills, and practice conflict resolution) l Group processing (team reflection-how well did we work as a team? )
Research and Theory Cooperative Learning l Three generalizations: l Cooperative learning should be applied consistently and systematically, but not overused. l Cooperative groups should be kept rather small in size. l Organizing groups based on ability levels should be done sparingly.
Classroom Practice Cooperative Learning l Using a variety of criteria (birth date, height, counting off) l Informal (pair-share, turn to your neighbor) formal (individual work contribution) and base groups (long-term) l Managing group size (smaller is better) l Combining cooperative learning with other classroom structures (don’t overuse)
