No lyer. To be well spoken and faire languaged. To be wise and well seene in discourses upon states. To be seen in tunges, and specially in Italian, French, and Spanish. Excerpts from Baldassar Castiglione: The Book of the Courtier (1528) To be an honest, a faire condicioned man, and of an upright conscience. To have the vertues of the minde, as justice, manlinesse, wisdome, temperance, staidenesse, noble courage, sober-moode, etc. To be more then indifferentlye well seene in learninge, in the Latin and Greeke tunges. To daunce well without over nimble footinges or to busie trickes. To singe well upon the booke. To play upon the Lute, and singe to it with the ditty. To ride and manege wel his horse. To be a good horsman for every saddle. To swimme well. To leape wel. The Book of the Courtier was written by Baldassare Castiglione in 1528. He was inspired to write it by debates that occurred on what makes an ideal person. What he produced became a best seller as it presented an ideal now known as “Renaissance Man. ” Undoubtedly few mortals succeeded in demonstrating all of the traits enumerated, but they did have something to aim at.

Johannes Gutenberg and the Printing Press A printing press is a mechanical device for applying pressure to an inked surface resting upon a medium (such as paper or cloth), thereby transferring an image. The mechanical systems involved were first assembled in Germany by the goldsmith Johannes Gutenberg around 1439, based on existing screwpresses used to press cloth, grapes etc. , and possibly to print woodcuts, which were printed in Europe before Gutenberg. The printing press had a revolutionary impact on European society. It enabled a printer to produce hundreds of copies, all exactly alike, of a single work. For the first time books were cheap enough that many people could by them. New ideas spread more quickly than ever before!
