THESIS EXAMPLE #1 Clearly, the role of religion in the founding of the Spanish colonies in the 16 th century was particularly different than the role it played in the founding of the English colonies in the 17 th century. The role of religion in the founding of the Spanish colony was more of a missionary one in comparison to the English colonies which were founded on the basis of religious persecution in England as seen in the Plymouth and Massachusetts bay colonies.
