Intro to Snapchat: 5 Ws What: Snapchat is a social media app that uses disappearing messages to stay in touch with others. Who: Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy are the founders of the app, and the app is targeted to people of all ages, though mainly teenagers have been found to use it. Where: The app was first launched on the Apple Store from Spiegel’s father’s living room. The app’s headquarters resides in San Francisco, California. When: The app was first launched in July 2011. Why: Spiegel presented Snapchat as his final project at Stamford College as he was graduating in 2011. A Timeline of Snapchat April 2011 - Evan Spiegel presents his final project for college. December 2012 - Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerburg threatens Evan and Snapchat, saying “We’re going to crush you, ” shortly before Facebook Poke was launched. Snapchat also rejected a $3 Billion check from Facebook requesting to buy the app. July 2013 - Snapkidz was created for kids who signed up for Snapchat under 13 years of age, which is connected app that allows kids to draw pictures that they take while not sending them to others. August 2014 - Our Story/My Story was created for all users of the app. January 2015 - Discovery Tab is introduced for viewer advertising, companies opt to have their own “story” that viewers can keep updated on day to day if they need something to do on the app. This is Snapchat’s main source of income, since it is a free app.

It goes up the more you use the app, and never goes down. Snapchat’s ghost in the logo has a name, “Ghostface Chillah, ” a tribute to Ghostface Killah of the Wu-Tang Clan.
