LOGIC MODEL A Logic Model is a program evaluation ROAD MAP and therefore, is the first step in evaluation. • Where are we going? • How do you plan to get there? • How will you know you are on course/on track? • What will tell you that you’ve arrived?
A Simple Logic Model
Why use a logic model? Ø “…the Logic Model is the basis for a convincing story of the program’s expected performance. ” (J. A. Mc. Laughlin & G. B. , 1999, p. 66) Ø To communicate the intended scenario of the implementation of the strategic plan with key stakeholders
Three forms of logic models* Ø Theory Approach Models – Ø emphasize theory of change Ø illustrate how and why you think your program will work Ø built from the “big picture” kinds of thoughts and ideas that went into conceptualizing your program. Ø Outcomes Approach Models – Ø focus on the early aspects of program planning Ø attempt to connect the resources and/or activities with the desired results in a workable program. Ø most useful in designing effective evaluation and reporting strategies. Ø Activities Approach Models – Ø pay the most attention to the specifics of the implementation process Ø provides the detailed steps you think you will need to follow to implement your program. * Content comes from Using Logic Models to Bring Together Planning, Evaluation, and Action Logic Model Development Guide. A More Detailed Logic Model What is invested What we do Who we reach The results we get: The difference we are making.
Example of a Logic Model
Logic Model Components Our Turn/Your Turn
Inputs Your Turn: What are the Inputs for your TCP?
Outputs Your Turn: What are the Outputs for your TCP?
Outputs vs Outcomes Outputs = Activities What we do… Outcomes = Results What happens as a result… Train and empower community volunteers Volunteers have knowledge and skills to work with at risk youth Teach financial management Low-income families are better skills to low-income families able to manage their resources Provide leadership development opportunities at 4 -H camp Campers learn new leadership and communication skills Presentation at annual Conference attendees know conference on latest research current research and use it to make informed decisions
Outcomes
Identifying Outcomes answer the question "So what? ” "What difference does the program make for participants, individuals, groups, families, and the community? " Outputs (Activities) Pregnant women attend a nutrition education program? Youth take part in a community service program? Farmers attend the annual field day? Short Term (Learning) Medium Term (Behavior) Long Term (Condition)
Sorting Activity: Preschool Literacy Project Sort the items into the correct column of the logic model template
Outcomes Your Turn: What are the Outcomes for your TCP?
Logic Model – Outcome Approach
Why is it important to understand this? If your logic model is well developed and the components are clear, it will be much easier to identify what to evaluate so that you focus on the most important areas.
EDOL 709 Webinar 1 Ø Prepare a draft logic model to share at Webinar 1. Ø Use one of the templates (in digital commons) or create your own. Ø Revise logic model based on webinar 1 information/feedback. ØSubmit assignment at end of Week 1.
