SS 7 G 3 • SS 7 G 3: • The student will explain the impact of location, climate, and physical characteristics on population distribution in Africa.
SS 7 G 3 a • SS 7 G 3 a: • Explain how the characteristics in the Sahara, Sahel, savanna, and tropical rain forest affect where people live, the type of work they do, and how they travel
Sahara (1) • Covers most of Northern Africa • Hot and dry all year • Very few plants and animals
Sahara (2) • Little human activity found here due to the limited access to water • People only work in mining operations • Travel is almost impossible across the region
Sahel (1) • Narrow region found directly south of the Sahara • Semiarid – hot summers and cooler winters • Some grasses, trees, and animals
Sahel (2) • Nomads are the main type of people who live here due to the small amount of water • Small amounts of farming – droughts can cause major problems • Travel is difficult
Savanna (1) • Found in most regions of Central Africa • Warm all year with wet and dry seasons • Some grasses, trees, and animals
Savanna (2) • More Africans are found here because of the increased water supply ( although they are mostly in coastal areas or near fresh bodies of water) • Many types of economic activity • Travel is easier that other places
Tropical Rain Forest (1) • Located in a small area of Central Africa • Warm and Rainy throughout the year • Many species of plants and animals
Tropical Rain Forest (2) • Smaller amounts of people live here • Some economic activity (found near rivers) • Travel is difficult
