What is the Map of Medicine? “a web-based visual representation of evidencebased patient care journeys covering 28 medical specialties and 390 pathways” www. mapofmedicine. com
Localisation at the Royal Free • Royal Free acting as an early adopter • Map being used to facilitate service redesign in order to achieve 18 week wait targets • Aim is to localise pathways to represent a ‘Royal Free best practice pathway’, which can then be used across primary and secondary care settings
Librarians as ‘Evidence Team’ Evidence team roles: • Collect relevant information on local and national guidelines before editing pathways • Carry out literature searching to support pathway development and ensure proposed changes are evidence-based • Act as Map Editor, to make local changes to the maps using map editing software • Attend workshops and facilitate, including making live changes to the pathways • Develop and maintain a record of pathways developed, reviewers, approvers and sign-off of these pathways
The first pathway • Deep vein thrombosis was localised as a pilot pathway • Evidence team carried out a background literature search to ensure no new guidelines had been published • They were present at the first workshop and helped to facilitate by making changes to the pathway live as attendees suggested them • All suggestions following the workshop were incorporated by Evidence Team into the final pathway
Advantages of being involved • The status of the library is increased • Librarians are able to showcase their skills and knowledge, and how they can help clinicians with key service projects • Promotion of library services within the Trust to people who may not have used them before • Attendance at meetings allows librarians to get to know new staff, including the identification of champions for the service • An opportunity to develop new skills • Having some input into the promotion and dissemination of the Map of Medicine helps to ensure librarians are seen as key figures in the national rollout of the product
Next steps • Promotional events within the Trust to raise awareness of the Map of Medicine – Evidence team to contribute • Further pathways to be developed and localised • Potential for Evidence Team to take larger role in setting up and facilitating workshops
