Today we are going to be focusing on direct speech. Lets take a look at a conversation: The children stood in a line and gazed up at the chief. “Now you must go into the jungle and hunt, ” he proclaimed to the gathering crowd. “But why? ” asked Toki. The chief looked solemnly down at Toki, furrowing his brow. He replied firmly, “Because it is what we do. You must show your worth within the tribe, earn respect and follow leaders. ” Toki and the other children glanced at one another. None of them wanted to kill an animal, but they knew it was what needed to be done in order to please the elders of the tribe. “Now here are your spears and daggers, ” the chief spoke, “go bravely and return only when you have succeeded in finding what you seek. ” Then the children took their tools and went off one by one, into the depths of the jungle… What is actually being said is in red.
