LO: To divide with remainders as decimals
Let's remind ourselves how to divide using the bus stop (short division method)
Example: 69÷ 3=23 The way we write this is as follows: 23 3 69 We now look at the outside number and see how many times it will go into the following digits. 3 will go into 6, 2 times so we put the 2 above the line (keeping our columns in line). 3 will go into 9, 3 times so we put the 3 above the line (keeping our columns in line).
Example: 17÷ 5=3. 4 The way we write this is as follows: 03 2 5 17 R 5 does not go into 1… so we have to cross it off and move it next to the 7 1 So now, we can ask, how many 5’s go into 17… 3 would make 15… remainder 2. Look at the outside number and see how many times it will go into the following digits. 03 R 2 This is equal to 3⅖ which is equivalent to 3. 4
Example: 17÷ 5=3. 4 The way we write this is as follows: This time we are going to change our 17 to its’ decimal form 17. 0 (this is the same number) 0 3. 4 5 17. 0 1 DON’T FORGET YOUR DECIMAL! Finally, we can ask how many 5’s will go into 20, the answer is 4. 5 does not go into 1… so we have to cross it off and move it next to the 7 2 Instead, we carry the 2 with our next nearest digit… the 0 So now, we can ask, how many 5’s go into 17… 3 would make 15… remainder 2.
Your turn A. B. C. D. E. F. G. H. 12 ÷ 5 = 34 ÷ 3 = 28 ÷ 8 = 53 ÷ 4 = 90 ÷ 8 = 203 ÷ 5 = 15 ÷ 6 = 25 ÷ 4 =
Check your answers A. B. C. D. E. F. G. H. 12 ÷ 5 = 2. 4 34 ÷ 4 =8. 5 28 ÷ 8 = 3. 5 53 ÷ 4 = 13. 25 90 ÷ 8 = 11. 25 203 ÷ 5 = 40. 6 15 ÷ 6 = 2. 5 25 ÷ 4 = 6. 25
