LO Researching methods for observing the Universe Progress
LO: Researching methods for observing the Universe. (Progress point B) Expected progress: Will have stated the different methods used to observe the Universe Connect: Watch this clip showing images captured in space by the Hubble telescope. NOTE: Nebulae are clouds of dust and gas (mainly hydrogen and helium where new stars form) Supernova are the final stage in the life cycle of a star before it explodes. https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=dz. Bh. B 1 h 9 B 8 I Better than expected progress: 1) Will have researched what has been discovered using each method. 2) Will have researched how each method captures images. (Year 9)
LO: Researching methods for observing the Universe. (Progress point B) TASK: There are different ways to observe the Universe; optical telescopes, radio telescopes, unmanned space crafts and spaces landers. For each of the methods in the attached table find the following key facts: Ø The date it was first used/launched Ø Who invented it (e. g. Edwin Hubble invented the Hubble telescope) Ø Its mission (What does it observe/what is its job? ) Ø Image of the space lander, spacecraft, telescope. Ø Record your results in the table
Extension task How has Edwin Hubble changed our ideas about space? What new things have we learned about our Universe that we wouldn’t know if the Hubble telescope had not been invented? Ø Remember that the Hubble telescope orbits in space so it can take images that telescopes on land cannot see. What other scientists/research organisations have increased our understanding of the Universe?
