LO I can tell you why some symbols
LO I can tell you why some symbols are used in a sacrament.
The Sacraments • 7 meeting points with God • God himself is present, waits for you , blesses you and leads you deeper into the community of the church There are 7 sacraments in the Catholic faith. • These are Baptism, Reconciliation, the Eucharist, Confirmation, Matrimony, Holy Orders and Anointing of the sick.
The gift of Baptism • Christ frees the child being Baptised from original sin and incorporates them, for their whole life into communion with him and with the whole church. They become a Christian.
Baptism • Water. By the sign of water God washes away the power of original sin. • Chrism oil shows how important the child is to God • White clothes - God wraps the child up in love • Baptismal candle shows that they are now “light of the world”.
Confirmation – take a moment to think about the picture and this sacrament.
Confirmation – the gift of the Holy Spirit • God makes the confirmand strong through the Holy Spirit to serve others. • The Bishop extends his hands over them and calls down the Holy Spirit • The Bishop anoints each one of them with the oil of Chrism by making a sign of the cross on their forehead and laying hands on them while you are praying • He calls them by their special confirmation Name. Mrs Beirne’s confirmation name is Frances after St Frances of Rome. • Stop for a minute : If anyone in your family is Confirmed you could ask them their Confirmation name and why they chose it.
Eucharist • The Eucharist is a meeting point where God gives himself for us as food • You receive the Body of Christ and become part of his body, the Church • Your turn : What are the symbols of the Eucharist ?
Reconciliation Pause and think about this sacrament and Year 3.
Reconciliation
Symbols of reconciliation • Purple stole – symbol of priest. You know why its purple? Tell a grown up • Keys – Jesus’ words to Peter in Matthew 16: 19, in which he established the Sacrament of Reconciliation, giving the Church authority to forgive sins. • Stop – go and look it up in the bible or online. • Scrounging whip – to help us remember that Jesus suffered on the cross for us. • Raised hand sign of the cross – When the priest blesses you he raises his hands
Anointing of the Sick symbols Oil of the Sick The olive oil blessed by the bishop of a diocese for use in the sacrament of anointing of the sick. Laying on of hands For a sick, elderly or dying person, the touch of another person in the ritual of the laying on of the hands intends to communicate comfort, care and concern. The priest lays his hands upon the person and silently prays.
The sacrament of Holy Orders In ordination, men, who are chosen by God and by the Church are given the authority to act in Jesus’ name and serve the people. Symbols are oil and the laying- on-of-hands. The oil signifies that the one anointed has been called by God to a special service. Fr Emmanuel has received this sacrament.
