Inglês, 2º Série, Modal Auxiliar Verbs: Will and Would VERBOS MODAIS Os verbos modais são muito comuns na língua inglesa. Para se tornar um falante competente de inglês, é preciso compreendêlos na sua estrutura e saber usá-los. Há dez verbos modais: can, could, should, ought to, must, will, shall, would, may, might. Além desses verbos modais autênticos, há cinco outros verbos e expressões que podem funcionar da mesma forma. São os seguintes: be able to, have to, need (to), had better, used to.

Inglês, 2º Série, Modal Auxiliar Verbs: Will and Would Existem regras específicas para os verbos modais: § Os verbos modais são ‘defectivos’, ou seja, não se conjugam em todas as formas verbais. § Não recebem o –s final na terceira pessoa do singular (he, she, it). § Não tem as formas do passado simples ou do –ing. § Não aceitam do (nem did) na interrogativa ou na negativa. § Não tem a forma nominal de infinitivo (não existem as formas to can, to must, etc. ). § São seguidos do infinitivo sem o to. I can dance. (Errado: I can to dance. ) – Sei dançar. As duas exceções a essa regra são ought to e used to. § Não podem fazer combinações com verbos auxiliares (Errado: I will must. . . , i have must. . . , etc. ). § Podem ser seguidos de have + particípio passado.
