Organisms • Another name for a living thing is ORGANISM. • A dog is an organism. • A person is an organism. • A tree is an organism. • A frog is an organism.
6 “Signs of Life” • All living things must have these six signs to be considered an organism: • Cells • Chemicals • Energy • Grow and develop • Respond to surrounding • reproduce
CELLS • All organisms are made of cells. • Cells are the smallest unit of life. You cannot see cells without a microscope! • Organisms that are made of only one cell are called UNICELLULAR. • Organisms that are made of many cells are called MULTICELLULAR.
CHEMICALS • The most abundant chemical in living things is WATER. • Water is considered the chemical of life…probably because our bodies are made mostly of water.
GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT • GROWTH mean becoming larger. All organisms grow as they become older. • DEVELOPMENT means change. All organisms change in different phases of their lives.
REPSOND TO SURROUNDINGS • A change in the surroundings that causes a reaction is called the STIMULUS. • The reaction is the RESPONSE • Example: Eyes blink to clapping hands • Stimulus: clapping hands • Response: eyes blink
REPRODUCE • All organisms can reproduce. • Reproduction is the ability to produce other living organisms, offspring, or children. • Humans produce babies, dogs puppies, and plants seedlings.
Survival • In order to survive, living things need: • Water • Food/ energy • shelter
