Living Things & the Environment Populations are affected by amount & availability of Resources
Organisms & Habitats • Organisms are any living thing • Organisms need food, water & shelter (resources) • A Habitat is the environment that provides the specific things that an organism needs to LIVE, GROW & REPRODUCE.
Factors of a Habitat • Biotic Factors • Alive or were once alive • ex. Plants, trees, waste products made by organisms • Abiotic Factors • Not alive & never were • Ex. Water, oxygen, rocks, light, temperature • the quality of resources affects organisms This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-NC
Ecosystem organization • Organisms: an INDIVIDUAL member of a SPECIES
Ecosystem Organization • Populations: all the members of a particular SPECIES living in an area
Ecosystem organization • Communities: All the different populations living together in an area
ECOSYSTEMS
Population Change • Birth & Death Rates • When births out number deaths, population GROW • Immigration & Emigration • Immigration: moving IN • Emigration: moving OUT • Population Density • The amount of individual organisms in a particular area.
Limiting Factors • Factors that limit population growth
Limiting Factors • Food & Water • Carrying Capacity is the largest population that an area can support
Limiting Factors • Climate & Weather • Climate change • Natural disasters This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY
Limiting Factors • Space & Shelter • Competition for shelter can limit a population
Carrying Capacity • Exponential growth occurs when there are no limiting factors • When a population has reached its limit in an area
Human Effect • Pollution • Over hunting • Deforestation
Key Topics 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) Pg. 388 -389, name 5 BIOTIC & 3 ABIOTIC factors from the photo What is a habitat & how do organisms find a Habitat? List & explain 3 examples of Biotic factors & Abiotic factors interacting List & describe the 3 levels of Ecosystem Organization How would lack of resources in an ecosystem impact the levels of organization? 6) List & describe 3 situations that impact an ecosystems population 7) Pg. 392 math toolbox # 1 & 2 8) What do population density mean? 9) What is a LIMITING FACTOR? 10) Pg. 395 (1 -5)
