LIVING ORGANISMS VOCABULARY
CELL • Smallest unit of life • All living things are made up of cells
UNICELLULAR ORGANISM Organisms made up of one cell and carries out all of life's functions in the single cell
EXAMPLES OF UNICELLULAR • Amoeba • Bacterial Cell • Euglena • Paramecium
MULTICELLULAR ORGANISM Complex organism consisting of multiple cells • Plants • Humans • Animals, insects, etc.
CELL SPECIALIZATION • Cells having “special” jobs • Cells doing certain life functions to help an organism live
TISSUE • A group of similar cells that perform the same function
ORGAN • Collection of tissues that carry out specialized function of the body
ORGAN SYSTEM • Group of organs that work together to perform a job
EXTERNAL ENVIRONMENT Everything outside a unicellular or multicellular organism Example- the air around us is in our external environment
TRANSPORT SYSTEM A system that transports (moves) required substances around the body of an organism (things such as oxygen, carbon dioxide, blood, nutrients) All multicellular organisms NEED a transport system In humans the circulatory system is our transport system
CIRCULATORY SYSTEM Heart, Blood Vessels Function (job): Circulate blood through the body and transports nutrients, water, and oxygen to cells in the body
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM Nose, Trachea, Lungs • Function (job): Brings oxygen into our lungs and takes carbon dioxide out (gas exchange)
TRACHEA (TRAY-KEY-UH) • Tube that carries air to the lungs (windpipe)
LUNGS • Baglike organs that remove carbon dioxide from the body and bring oxygen to the blood • Part of the respiratory system
SKELETAL SYSTEM Bones • Function: Protection of organs from external shock, gives shape and support to the body, produces red blood cells
MUSCULAR SYSTEM Muscles • Function: Movement and helps with posture. Also helps the body maintain the right temperature.
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM Mouth, Esophagus, Stomach, Intestines • Function: Breaks down food into nutrients to go into the bloodstream and be used for energy
NERVOUS SYSTEM Brain, Spinal Cord, Nerves • Function: Control center of the body. Sends messages to other parts of the body for response
