THE EMBLEM OF COLOGNE Cologne was one of the founders of the German Hanse and the colours come from the emblem of the Hanse: red and white. The three crowns come from the three kings, their bones came to Cologne in the 12 th century, they were a present of the emperor Friedrich I. Barbarossa. The eleven black drops remind about saint Ursula and her ten associates, who were killed by Attila the hun.
KÖLNER ALTSTADT In the “Altstadt” there are many tourist. Here you see a street of the „Kölner Altstadt“. The old centre of Cologne is situated next to the river “Rhein”. Cologne was a big trading town since the middle age, because of its good position at the river. Today you can also take a nice walk at the “Rheinpromenade” or you can also go on a boat trip. In the “Altstadt” you find many restaurants, old houses, old streets and the famous brew houses where you can drink “Kölsch” – the Cologne beer- and eat Cologne gastronomic specialties.
NEUMARKT The “Neumarkt” is situated in the centre of Cologne. It has got one of the biggest tram stations of Cologne. Thousands of people change tram there every day. If you want to go shopping on the famous street “Schildergasse” you also drop out of the tram at the station “Neumarkt”.
KARNEVAL Every year the citizens of Cologne celebrate carnival. The people dress up. They disguise themselves as cats, cowboys, clowns or other figures. They meet in pubs and at the big Cologne places. There they drink “Kölsch”, sing, have fun and shout “Kölle Alaaf”. Every day during the six carnival days there are many carnival parades in Cologne. The biggest one is the famous “Rosenmontagszug”. It´s also the biggest carnival parade of Germany. There they throw sweets – the “Kamelle”- and flowers – the “Strüßjer”.
PHILHARMONIE The Kölner Philharmonie is one of the most beautiful concert halls in the world and hosts over 400 events in every season. 2000 people can sit in the philharmonie. It was built in 1986.
CINEMAS In Cologne there are many cinemas. The biggest one is the Cinedom. The Cinedom has got 14 film halls. The ceiling is a blue sky with many stars.
THE COLOGNE CATHEDRAL The Cologne Cathedral is dedicated to Saint Peter and the Blessed Virgin Mary. It´s 157 m (516 ft. ) high and the second-tallest building in Cologne and the third highest of the world! It´s a gothic architecture building, it´s very famous, because the reliquary of the three kings Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar. Their bones lie in the Shrine of the Three Kings, it´s a golden shrine, it´s standing in the center of the church. The windows of the church are full of paintings, they´re colored and when the sun shines, it´s very beautiful to watch the windows glimmer.
