Living Building Challenge What is a Living Building
Living Building Challenge
What is a Living Building? “A Living Building generates all of its own energy through clean, renewable resources; captures and treats its own water; incorporates only non-toxic, appropriately sourced materials; and operates efficiently and for maximum beauty. A building must perform as designed for one full year of occupancy and pass a third-party audit before receiving certification as “living. ”’
Examples On the Living Future website ( https: //living-future. org/lbc/case-studies/ ) there is a list of many zero energy homes and buildings. Each example provides specific details such as the building materials, its renewable qualities, and the design process. One specific example is the Alpine Branch Library. ● Net Energy Use: -6, 850 k. Wh ● Solar thermal panels provide hot water ● Power outlets have sensors that turn them off https: //living-future. org/lbc/case-studies/alpine-branch-library/
Examples ● Bertschi School is another example of one of the living buildings. ● It is the first building to pursue the v 2. 0 of the Living Building Challenge and it was designed with the students input in mind.
