LIVE FOR CHRIST Armed for Jesus
I Peter 4: 1 -2 1 Therefore, since Christ has suffered in the flesh…
CHRIST SUFFERED IN THE FLESH • I Peter 2: 21 -25 • I Peter 3: 18 • It was unjust and awful, but He suffered to the end.
I Peter 4: 1 -2 1 Therefore, since Christ has suffered in the flesh,
I Peter 4: 1 -2 1 Therefore, since Christ has suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves…
ARM YOURSELVES • Not with human weapons (John 18: 36) to avenge our Lord. • Armed with spiritual weapons for a spiritual war (Rom. 13: 12; II Cor. 6: 7; 10: 1 -6; Eph. 6: 11, 13; I Thes. 5: 8; Rom. 6: 13) • But those aren’t what we arm ourselves with in I Peter 4: 1 -2
I Peter 4: 1 -2 1 Therefore, since Christ has suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves
I Peter 4: 1 -2 1 Therefore, since Christ has suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same purpose…
ARMED WITH PURPOSE • Heb. 4: 12 – intentions • Armed with a mindset
I Peter 4: 1 -2 1 Therefore, since Christ has suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same purpose…
ARMED WITH THE SAME PURPOSE SUFFERING • Prepared to suffer whenever and wherever we are. • Suffering for a purpose
I Peter 4: 1 -2 1 Therefore, since Christ has suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same purpose
I Peter 4: 1 -2 1 Therefore, since Christ has suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same purpose, because he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, 2 so as to live the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for the lusts of men, but for the will of God.
ARMED WITH THE SAME PURPOSE SUFFERING • Prepared to suffer whenever and wherever we are. • Suffering for a purpose o To please Him (I Pet. 4: 2)… John 8: 29 o Because of Him (Mt. 5: 10 -12; I Pet. 4: 14 -16) o To be like Him (I Pet. 4: 1, 13; 2: 21) • By suffering, we conquer sin
BY SUFFERING WE CONQUER SIN • Two ways of looking at this passage • Those who suffer to the point of death have secured their victory and cannot sin anymore • Those who suffer for the sake of righteousness have made their decision to serve God and not sin. • Those who suffer still live (I Pet. 4: 2) and can still be lost (I Cor. 9: 27). But what a waste to endured so much, gone so far, only to fail in the end! • We conquer sin because those who embrace suffering disarm Satan and his main weapons • Pleasure • Pain
SUFFERING FOR JESUS • We do not seek pain, because Jesus did not seek pain. (Lk. 19: 10) • Christians fled persecution (Acts 8: 1 -4). Paul was lowered from a window (Acts 9: 29 -30) and fled to other cities (Acts 9: 29 -30) • Being armed with the purpose of suffering is a decision to accept that some pain is inevitable and that no amount of pain will keep us from our prize. • That which we seek is at the end of a path paved with pain. (For example, I Cor. 4: 9, 11 -13; II Cor. 11: 23 -29)
SUFFERING FOR JESUS • Deprived passions (I Pet. 4: 2 -3) • Persecution – nails in the hand scourges for the back (I Pet. 4: 12 -13) • Rejection • Gossip and slander about us (Mt. 5: 11) • Loss • Loneliness • Humility and submission • Discouragement • Hunger and thirst • Hard work • Etc.
I DON’T KNOW WHAT TYPE OF PAIN YOU WILL FACE, BUT I DO KNOW… • It will hurt! • If Satan has anything to say about it, it will hurt a lot and for a long time.
LIVE FOR CHRIST: ARMED YOURSELF WITH THE PURPOSE OF SUFFERING • The pain will come. Be ready. Not surprised. Unmoved. • When armed with the purpose of suffering, we wield power over Satan and sin. • On the other side of the pain, is victory.
