LITURGICAL YEAR NOTES This is the annual cycle of the mysteries of Christ, the Blessed Virgin Mary, the angels and saints. Purpose: § to live the mystery of Christ throughout the entire year § redeem and sanctify (________) time How does the Church celebrate the Liturgical year? § In the Mass, Liturgy of the Hours, and other forms of public worship

CYCLES Temporal Cycle: time and seasons; focuses on the life of Christ Sanctoral Cycle: celebrates the Virgin Mary, saints, & angels

DEVELOPMENT BEGINNING o Local churches and dioceses celebrated certain anniversaries 1568 o Pius V created a universal calendar o 87 feasts 1605 o Clement VIII increased the number of feasts

DEVELOPMENT (CON’T) 1911 1958 o. Pius X had 266 feasts o 338 feasts PROBLEM!! The temporal cycle needs to take priority over Sanctoral 1964 o Paul VI reduced the number of feasts to 150 in order to show the priority of the temporal cycle over the sanctoral cycle

RANKING OF DAYS Length: evening to evening (sunset to sunset) 1. Solemnities – celebrate events, mysteries, or people of great importance and universal significance in salvation history - 24 in the general calendar (ex. St. Joseph Husband of Mary, Christmas, Easter) - Begin the evening before (vs. midnight) 2. Feasts - 25 in the general calendar. All fixed dates except the Holy Family 3. Memorials – 159 in the general calendar (+6 in the US) - All fixed dates Obligatory (71) – ex. St. Scholastica Optional (94) – ex. St. Blase 4. Ferial – weekday with no feast
