• • • Little history William Booth-Founder-1852 broke away from London’s conventional methods to preach Christ name to the homeless, the hungry, and the poor. 1865 he began setting up tents to help provide religious services and other assistance (instant hit) Thieves, prostitutes, gamblers, and drunkards were among Booth's first to convert to Christianity and to spread his helping words. In 1867, Booth had only 10 full-time workers, but by 1874, the number had grown to 1, 000 volunteers Group known as ‘The Christian Mission or Hallelujah Army” Booth was referred to as the ‘General’
Little history • 1878 It became known as the Salvation Army. • Between 1881 and 1885 some 250, 000 people were converted under the ministry of The Salvation Army • 1879 the first meeting in America was held in Philadelphia and eventually Booth sent over reinforcements from London to continue their mission in 1880. • President Cleveland gave the group a warm personal endorsement in 1886 and from there they spread rapidly across the U. S. • Today, The Salvation Army is active in virtually every corner of the world. • Booth died in 1912 but his family continued the his life’s mission to this day. • The building in Wichita has been open since the 80’s.
Facility info & Services • Childrens room/play area • People they assist – veterans, referrals, walk-ins • People must be actively looking for employment – once job is attained, half must go towards a savings and a percent of that go towards debt. • Split into two parts – a hotel type side or shelter ($60) and a transitional or studio apts ($90) • Laundry facility – detergent provided • People can stay up to a full year, but depending on the situation can stay longer
Services • Toy Run – people gather to ride their decorated motorcycles around a designated area and deliver candy. • Angel Tree – toys donated to approximately 9 K families • Warm Hearts – handout coats to families – Everybody • Work with Mc. Kinney-Vento – if kids live further an 2. 5 miles from their school, transportation is provided. • Work with J. J. A Boys – (juvenile justice authority) • Case Manager for Transitional housing – helps people find the resources they need.

Donations • Receive personal hygiene items -then they gradually pay for their own • Do not accept used items (b/c of bed bugs) • Items they don’t have they will seek out for them • Substitute chemo formula donation • New born items such as diapers, milk, etc • Food donations: Panera, Chipolte, Olive Garden, Red Lobster -buy from food banks but also accept donations from them
Other Provided Assistance • Help with nutrition info • Information on how to balance and do a budget • Helps people find resources in the community to help with future assistance
