INTRODUCTION • Lithuanian Costume is Western style modern clothes. Lithuanian dress are stylish and decent and gives a description of Lithuanian society and culture. As the time elapsed dressing in Lithuania also evolved and became quite similar to other European countries. • The Urban folk started wearing the modern outfits whereas the traditional clothing is worn only in festivals.

History of clothing in Lithuania • the traditional apparel made in the home and most frequently seen in Lithuania in the middle of the 19 th century id now worn only as representative dress by women on major national holidays and by members of folk dance ensembles and choruses. • From the second half of the 19 th century, home made clothes began to be replaced by manufactured garments which first appeared in the cities and manors, and by the beginning of the 20 th century the wearing of traditional dress became rare even in the hamlets. • Lithuanian village women served many of the hand-women articles and holiday apparel handed down from generation to generation as part of their heritage and dowry; many examples of the original dress of the 18 th-19 th centuries were subsequently collected and placed in museums. Archaeological excavations and historical sources provide some background for the even older fashions from whittle now typical national costumes are derived.

Ancient Lithuanian Costume had certain traits : • All the costumes were made from homespun yarn and were bleached or dyed particularly with plant dyes. • The weaving process was also different and they were mostly of traditional type. • The motifs and colors used in the clothes were diversified and varied. • The cut of the dress were unique and overcast, crochet and cord were popular. • The fasteners in the garments used are metal, string, leather or wood.

Women’s traditional costume • The traditional Lithuanian costume for women consists of a woven colorful skirt accompanied by an embroidered blouse, vast, head piece and ribbon. Jeweleries are essential part of dressing and were made from amber. An adult married woman wears a wimple or checked handkerchief.

MEN’S TRADITIONAL COSTUME • Men also wear costumes made from homespun festive garments. The basic dress for men consist of long stripped or diagonally stripped trouser and the lower portion is woven in darker strips. The trousers are tapered and they wear loose waist-length vest or long jackets.
