Lithography & Paper Lithography from traditional to contemporary printmaking
Lithography … is a printmaking technique where you print an image onto paper from a lithographic limestone. The technique is a method of printing originally based on the immiscibility of oil and water.
Lithography You can use many different ways to work on the stone: Drawing, photo transfers etc.
Lithography The process has been used for a long time. People used it to print magazines and news papers. But also…
Lithography … at one time people printed money that way.
Lithography – this is how it works (simplified) 1. The image is transferred on the stone. 2. The areas around the image are being covered with Gum Arabic. This makes sure on the image catches ink. 3. The image is then inked up. 4. The inked-up image is then printed with a lithography press. 5. Voilà. The image is on paper.
Now how in the world does this work with paper? ? ?
Paper Lithography Instead of a stone as a surface from which we print, we use paper. We need a Xerox-copy of your image (Big copy machines spit those out. We cannot use inkjet copies. )
Paper Lithography If we want to print writing. It needs to be REVERSED.
Paper Lithography on Clay Instead of using a paper surface, we will use clay as a surface to print on.
