Session 9: Literary Device Teaching Points �In the last session, you learned how to write a Connected Examples body paragraph. �In this session, you will learn how to write a Literary Device body paragraph that uses your chosen evidence. �Literary essayists use multiple types of body paragraphs to support their claims. �One type is the Literary Device body paragraph.

Session 9: Literary Device Active Engagement �Examine the handout Literary Device Body Paragraph �Review the steps for writing a Literary Device Body Paragraph. �As we read the model Literary Device body paragraph identify which sentences fit with each step. �Underline and label the steps as you find them in the model paragraph.

Session 9: Literary Device 8: Connected Examples Independent Practice �Review your thesis paragraph and your Evaluating Evidence handout. �Follow the steps outlined on the handout Literary Device Body Paragraph to write a Literary Device body paragraph that supports the claim you made in your thesis paragraph.

Session 9: Literary Device Share � Exchange your paragraph with a partner. � Partners underline and label the steps that the writer followed to write their paragraph. � Answer the question: Does the paragraph contain all of the steps? � Partners answer the following questions on the paper: 1. Does the paragraph make sense? 2. Does the paragraph support the claim? 3. Does it read smoothly or is it choppy? If the answer to any of the above questions is no, the partner should try to offer suggestions about how to improve. � Return the paragraph to the writer and work to clarify any questions that arise.
