Session 1: Themes Essential Questions & Teaching Points �What are the multiple themes writers portray in their novels? �How are these themes developed? �Literary essayists read on multiple levels. �Literary essayists read for both plot and meaning.

Session 1: Themes FYI Post-Unit Assessment Task �How is a theme developed across a text using various literary techniques? �After reading a whole class novel or independent novel of your choice, write an argumentative literary essay that addresses the question and support your position with evidence from the texts. �Be sure to acknowledge alternate themes developed in the novel.
