Literary Criticism Psychoanalytic, Marxist and Feminist Theory
Psychoanalytic Theory The idea that there is a conscious and unconscious mind is central to psychoanalytic theory. Freud theorized that people have a conscious part of the mind where things takes place and an unconscious part of the mind where desires and drives exist that people may not be aware of.
Psychoanalytic Theory Freud believed the experiences of childhood lead to the development of 3 divisions in the mind: id: unconscious and repressed desires ego: the conscious part of the brain superego: the conscience
Psychoanalytic Theory The text is viewed as having a latent meaning behind the obvious meaning that even the author may be unaware of. Oftentimes the object of psychoanalytic criticism is the author him/herself or a particularly interesting character.
Marxist Theory What we often classify as a world view (such as the Victorian age) is mainly the experience of the dominant class. Marxist theory focuses on the clash between the dominant and repressed classes in any given age.
Marxist Theory Interactions between characters are examined in terms of power, which is often synonymous with wealth. Is there a hierarchy evident in the relationship between characters? Are characters drawn to reflect one social class or another?
Marxist Theory How characters use their leisure time and the jobs they hold are evaluated to indicate their place within the class system. The role of government, its success, how it is implemented and the public’s response to it is also a consideration.
Marxist Theory Concerns about the aesthetics of a piece of literature are secondary to exploring the ultimate political and social meanings that it contains.
Feminist Theory Just like it sounds, Feminist Theory is a criticism informed by the politics of feminism. It is concerned with the politics of women’s authorship and the representation of women’s condition within literature. Uncovering a female tradition of writing and rediscovering old texts has been an objective of feminist theorists.
Feminist Theory Seeks to give voice to the female perspective and to distinguish that perspective from the male point of view. Additionally, this critique is mindful of sexual politics in choice of language or style.
