Literary Archetypes & Common Symbols Language Arts Spring 2010

What is an archetype? n n n Term used to describe universal symbols that evoke deep / sometimes unconscious responses in a reader Characters, images, themes that symbolically embody universal meanings/ basic human experiences can be archetypes. Common literary archetypes include quests, initiations, scapegoats, descents to the underworld, and ascents to heaven, etc.

Common Character Archetypes n n n The Hero: Courageous figure, often “saves the day” The Outcast: He or she has ejected from society or has left voluntarily. Sometimes a Christ figure. (i. e. Simon in The Lord of the Flies) The Scapegoat: Blamed for everything, even if he/she is not at fault. (i. e. Snowball in Animal Farm) The Star-Crossed Lovers: Young couple joined by love but unexpectedly parted by fate. (i. e. Romeo and Juliet) The Shrew: A nagging, bothersome wife, batters husband with verbal abuse.

Situational Archetypes n n The Task: Situation in which character, group of characters, must complete some duty often of monstrous proportion. (i. e. Frodo’s task to keep the ring safe in The Lord of the Rings) The Quest: Character(s) search for something, consciously or unconsciously. Actions, thoughts, feelings center on goal of completing the quest. (i. e. Shrek ) The Loss of Innocence: Occurs through sexual experience, violence, or any other means. The Initiation: A character joins another sphere of influence, usually (in literature) into adulthood.

Common Image Archetypes n n n Tend to elicit comparable psychological responses & similar cultural functions. Water Sun Colors Shapes, Numbers, & Other objects

Water n Symbol of life, cleansing, rebirth—represents the mystery of creation Examples: Sea—spiritual mystery & infinity; timelessness & eternity River—death / rebirth (baptism), flowing of time into eternity, transitional phases of the life cycle

Sun n Represents energy, creativity, thinking, enlightenment, wisdom, spiritual vision, the passing of time, and life Examples: Rising Sun—Birth and Creation Setting Sun—Death

Colors n n n Red—love, sacrifice, hate, evil, anger, violent passion, sin, blood, disorder Green—birth / death, fertility, luck, hope, jealousy, decay, greed Blue—sadness, spiritual purity, truth, religious feelings of security Black—power, doom, death, darkness, mystery, primal wisdom, unconscious evil White—purity, innocence, death, terror, supernatural, blinding truth

Shapes n Circle (Sphere)—wholeness, unity n Egg (Oval)—the mystery of life and the forces of regeneration

Animals n Snake (serpent, worm)—evil, corruption, sensuality, destruction, wisdom, temptation n Dark-colored bird (raven, hawk)—death, hate, corruption n Light-colored bird (dove)—peace, love, life

Numbers n Three (3)—represents unity, spiritual n Four (4)—cycle of life, (earth, water, n Seven (7)—unity between 3 and 4, awareness, and light fire, air) nature completion and perfect order, mystical
