Literary Analysis

Purpose The purpose of a literary analysis essay is to carefully examine and evaluate an aspect of a work of literature. For example, we will identify theme and analyze how the writer suggests that theme through his/her use of literary devices. (plot, point of view, figurative language, foreshadowing, symbolism, imagery, etc. ) Why? Analysis writing is the sharpened, focused expression of critical thinking abilities. Writing boils down to how well you develop an idea. You MUST clearly support the idea that you are developing. This kind of writing demands structure.

Structure Introductory Paragraph: Hook (Grabber)– Grab the reader’s attention. (Quote, question, statement, anecdote) Identify the author and title of the piece that you are analyzing. Give a brief summary. Thesis statement. Clearly state the idea that your writing will develop. In our case, you will clearly state theme of the piece.

Body of Analysis Essay: 3 paragraphs of body each include the following: Topic Sentence. State one of the topics (literary elements) associated with your thesis (theme). Explain how it supports your thesis. Text evidence and elaboration. (Summary, paraphrase, specific details, quote) “For example”, “The text states”, “The author or narrator reveals”. Explain how evidence relates to topic (literary element) and thesis (theme). Relate the evidence back to your topic sentence.

Conclusion Final paragraph of a 5 paragraph essay. Restate your thesis (theme) in different words. Summarize the main points of your analysis.
