Weekly planning grid Week beginning – 01/06/20 P 1 – Science experiments – water and weather Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Learning Intention Activity We are learning to conduct experiments To consolidate our learning of water and the water cycle ty to make rain in a jar. To do this you will need: a jar, water, shaving foam and food colouring. • Place water in a jar (¾ full) • Cover with top with shaving foam • Pour a few drops of food colouring on top and watch it rain in the jar (for fun make it rain different colours – maybe rainbow rain!) We are learning to conduct experiments Let’s make rain in a jar a different way! You will need: a jar, boiling water (adults only), a plate to go over the jar, ice • place boiling water in a jar • Put plate on top • Place ice on plate and wait for the condensation to grow • After a few minutes small rain drops should form and slowly drop We are learning to conduct experiments Let’s explore how tornadoes take place by making one in a plastic bottle. You will need: a plastic bottle and lid, water, glitter (optional) or other small particles e. g. raisings, a couple of drops of washing up liquid. • Fill bottle with water ¾ full • Place the glitter/raisings in it • Put a few squirts of washing liquid • Swirl the bottle for 30 seconds • Place on table and watch the tornado • Discuss what happens to all the glitter/raisins as it slows down Today let’s create a weather vane. This will help you find the direction of wind in your garden. You will need a paper plate, blu tac or playdough, pencil, tape straw and card/paper. • Write N, E, S, W (North, East, South, West) on plate • Pierce centre of plate with pencil and stick it to it with blu tac/playdough under plate • Draw and cut a triangle and square and stick each onto different ends of a straw • Tape middle of straw to upright pencil • Place in garden and watch the direction the wind is moving in – tell someone your findings. Make your own rain gauge to collect and record how much it rains. You will need: a small bottle/jar/tin, pen, string. • Draw lines (inches or cm) along bottle • Secure bottle/jar/tin to a tree/railing etc. • Monitor your rain gauge after it rains (how many inches in a week, month? ) Please share pictures of any of these experiments on TEAMS. We would love to see them.
