RSES 5 th grade teachers: Susan Walters and Lindsay Stephens extended learning from Artful Reading by using the core text, The Black Book of Colors, as a read aloud to springboard into their study of poetry. In the culminating lesson, students created a color poem that was entered into the 4 -H poetry contest. One of the winning poems is featured below: The Greatness of Green is the color of trees in a dense forest The color of grapes, iguanas, and eyes Green tastes like green beans fresh from your very own garden Green looks like emeralds shining behind thick shrubs Green feels like wet grass crunching under my barefeet Green sounds like frogs croaking at the crack of dawn Green smells like the fabulous freshness of Granny Smith apples Green is the color of incredible hot air balloons The color of leaves, shamrocks, and guacamole. SES 1 st Grade Classes: Shannon Taylor, Whitney Holt and Cara Embry transformed their rooms into a “Marketplace” using the anchor text Last Stop on Marketplace from their Artful Reading module. Students “traveled” around the mock marketplace to better understand the difference in the terms goods and services. Students also learned about several goods and services provided by many of our local businesses. Additionally, students participated in a canned food drive and donated their “goods” to the food pantry.
