Literacy In this session, we will be writing our own nonchronological reports. I will do a modelled write from my plan to support you with your writing. Remember your basic skills! • Capital letters used correctly. • Punctuation used correctly. • Reread to check for cohesion.
Introduction Rhetorical questions to engage the reader. Generaliser Have you ever wondered how many species of aliens there are? Do you doubt their existence? It will amaze you to know that the Zoats are just one species of sixtythree species of aliens already discovered. Most scientists believe there are hundreds more. Read on to find out about the Zoats.
Now, you write your introduction. Remember • Capital letters used correctly – for proper nouns and at the end of sentences. • Punctuation used correctly. • Reread to check for cohesion.
Appearance Expanded noun phrases Compound word Fronted adverbial Zoats are mainly purple and green with small, fire- red eyes. Although they are quite short, they have a long body with four short, stubby legs and four long arms. All Zoats have a long, green tail that they use to pick snowmelons off tall, frozen solar trees. Additionally, their tails can be used to lash out at predators. Zoats also have three medium-sized, bumpy horns, similar to unicorn horns, that they rub with the horns of other Zoats to show affection. Their four long fangs are useful for piercing the thick skin of snowmelons.
Now, you write your paragraph on appearance. Remember • Capital letters used correctly – for proper nouns and at the end of sentences. • Punctuation used correctly. • Reread to check for cohesion.
Habitat Generaliser Compound word Fronted adverbial All Zoats can be found on one of Jupiter’s moons. The moon is dusty and covered in craters. Most live underground for warmth as the moon is extremely cold. Usually, Zoats sleep in groups of 6 -8, huddled together. The only thing to grow on this moon is the frozen solar tree; therefore, all Zoats live on its fruit, snowmelons. Zoats do not travel beyond their habitat.
What do they eat? I have put the subordinate clause at the start of the sentence so need to use a comma to separate it from the main clause. Because Zoats do not travel beyond their habitat, they only eat snowmelon as this is the only food that grows there.
Now, you write about the habitat and what they eat. Remember • Capital letters used correctly – for proper nouns and at the end of sentences. • Punctuation used correctly. • Reread to check for cohesion.
Fascinating Facts • Zoats live up to 173 years old. Subordinate clause • All Zoats have long nails on each hand which are as tough as diamonds. They use their nails for digging into the hard surface of the moon. • When other aliens visit their habitat, Zoats let off smelly trumps to warn them away. If the terrible smell doesn’t do the job, they use their long tails to lash out at them.
End Rhetorical questions to engage the reader. Next time you look up into space and see one of Jupiter’s moons, think about the Zoats eating their snowmelons. Would you like to visit the Zoats on their home planet?
Now, you need to finish writing your reports. Remember • Capital letters used correctly – for proper nouns and at the end of sentences. • Punctuation used correctly. • Reread to check for cohesion.
